Because trade schools offer training toward a particular career, it is important to determine exactly what kind of training one needs to be successful in that particular field. Trade schools typically offer certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. Ask employers what kind of education and experience they look for when hiring and use that as a starting point.
Trade schools should be accredited by a reputable organization (the US Department of Education maintains a list of such organizations), and most states require trade schools to be licensed as well. Accreditation and licensure provide assurance that a school meets certain quality standards. Many employers will not hire graduates of unaccredited schools, and earned credits generally will not transfer to other schools.
When choosing a trade school, it is a good idea to compare several schools. Look for things such as knowledgeable instructors, students who enjoy the program, and interesting classes that adequately prepare students for work, all while considering program length, placement rates, and drop out rates.
